Discover the secrets of the Altagracia Basilica in the Altagracia Museum located in Higüey which was built to recover and exhibit the artistic heritage to all the dominicans.
Here, you can find different objects that are part of the people’s religious lives and have been properly restored for the exhibition, standing out among them, there is the people’s oblations to the Virgin and an exhibition comprised of a series of oil paintings on wooden planks from the 18th century by Diego José Hilaris, known as medallions for their shape. From the 27 original works by this author, the museum exhibits 16 almost intact ones, narrating the miracles of the Virgin from the 17th to the 18th century.
In a different room, known as Sala del Tesoro, you can see examples of local and American goldsmithing from the 17th to the 20th century where it is worth noticing the locket in gold and emeralds and a silver censer. You can also see religious clothing from different periods and other relevant historical pieces. Besides the permanent exhibition with or without guided tour, you can also attend the many cultural events organized by the museum.
