Discover the historic town of Higüey and its vicinity, an attractive spot for Europeans in Colonial times.
Founded at the end of the 15th century or beginning of the 16th, there are two theories about its foundation. The first one says that Juan de Esquivel commanded the building of a fortress in the place after conquering it while the second states that the governor Nicolás de Ovando requested its constructions during the consolidation of the conquest of La Española.
Juan Ponce de León also lived there between 1502 and 1508, when he left to conquer Puerto Rico and Florida. It was him who ordered the construction of San Rafael del Yuma Castle, 24 km to the city.
You can also visit the basilica of Higüey, the Virgen de Altagracia Basílica, a modern cement building with an original design employing arches. Near to the basilica there can be found several bars and beach huts with tables in the Altagracia Avenue, where they serve sandwiches, turnovers and other kinds of light food with beer, juices and soft-drinks.
Visit the coasts of Higüey and enjoy the idyllic beaches of Boca de Yuma, Punta Cana, Bávaro and Uvero Alto.
In January and August they the Festivities of Higüey are held, when they take out in pilgrimage a bull calf to the temple of the Virgen de Altagracia, offering several activities for both locals and visitors.
