Even though Pedernales Town was founded in 1927, the area was inhabited since colonial times. The first military fortress was built in 1934 and soon afterwards, the Oviedo-Pedernales Road was constructed.
It is located nearby the natural paradises of Hoyo de Pelempito (Pelempito’s Hole) and bahía de las Águilas (Eagles’ Bay); these two areas are protected zones and do not have any lodgings. Is for this reason that tourism has increased in the city: tourists are attracted by the beauty and the quietude of the landscapes of this province.
The main economic activities of the town are stockbreeding, agriculture, mining and fishing. The most important agricultural products are beans and coffee; regarding stockbreeding, the main production comes from bovine and caprine cattle; fishing is focused on lobsters and lambí (the renowned marine giant snail).
In Pedernales province there are lots of incredible destinations, for example and among others, Isla Beata and Alto Velo Island, the laguna de Oviedo and Jaragua National Park, where it is possible to explore caverns and contemplate the wonderful tropical environment.
