Jimaní is the capital city of Independencia province, and it is named after the indigenous word Ximaní, that could have been the name of the chief of the Jaragua chiefdom.
This is a new town: it was founded during the ruling of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, where the church, the hotel, and some public offices and residential houses were built.
In 1958, Jimaní was selected as the setting for the signing of the treaty between Trujillo and Duvalier. The treaty aimed at improving the relations between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
If you take a walk along its streets, you will be able to find several restaurants and cafeterias where it is possible to taste the local cuisine while meeting the charming local people that are descendants from the cultural and racial mix that characterises every frontier place.
