Mao is located in the island’s northeastern end, it is the main city of Valverde province and one of the island’s main rice producers.
Mao is a Taíno word that means ‘land between rivers’. Indeed, the town really lives up to its name as it is located between rivers: Mao River, Yaque del Norte River and Gurabo River.
Mao became a village in 1882, and even though it is not a very touristic place, those visitors who come to this part of the island enjoy its lovely northern landscapes where it is possible to find the region’s most typical flora and fauna.
One of the most appreciated and outstanding places in this village is the Ámina Spa, in the Ámina National Park.
