Visit Altos de Chavón, the copy of a 16th century European village with its cobbled streets and buildings in coralline and terracotta stones blocks. It was built in 1976 by Roberto Copa, former designer of Paramount Studios, and Charles Bluhdorn, an American industrialist, in a place with great views over the Chavón river.
Also known as the City of Artists, it has become a cultural center in the region. It is a meeting point for different kinds of art, where you’ll find artists’ studios, handicraft workshops and art galleries.
It also has an intensive program of studies where students from all over the world vie to get a post and learn ceramic, fashion, design, and other handicrafts. Students from Altos de Chavón finish their studies in the Parsons School in New York.
The Iglesia de San Estanislao Church is located in the main square of Altos de Chavón, and it is one of the most photographed monuments in the complex. Despite its old looking it was built in 1979, and nowadays it is the place where numerous national and international couples get married. From it stand out its Neoclassical facade, a small rose window and a bell gable with two bells, which access is via an exterior staircase. On its interior are the ashes of the patron saint of Polonia, San Estanislao, and a handmade carve statue of Krakow the Pope John II sent to honor the opening of the church. Masses are said on Saturdays and Sundays at 17h, but the entrance door is always open, so you can see its interior from the bars.
Visit its Pre-Columbian museum located in front of the church where, apart the permanent exhibition dedicated to Pre-Hispanic art (from the Pre-Ceramic to Taínos), they organize guided tours, exhibitions and workshops.
Take advantage of your stay in here and attend a concert in the wonderful amphitheater Greek in style of 5,000 seats, built in the center of Altos de Chavón, where artists like Gloria Estefan and Frank Sinatra have sang. In the winter, it is quite visited by tourists due to the weekly performances that take place on it.
It is located close to Casa de Campo which has three golf courses (Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore and Los Links) and a magnificent coast, where you’ll be able to visit Catalina Island or enjoy Playa Minitas. You can also visit the prestigious Casa de Campo Marina just 4 Km far from there.
