Visit the Santísima Cruz Basilica, a colonial building next to the Duarte and Eugenio Miches parks, where you can watch a collection of valuable religious objects perfectly preserved.
Although it was built in 1556, the current building does not resemble the original design since the materials first used were hardly resistant and had to be restored several times. The church was eventually finished in 1878, and the bell tower later added in 1912.
In the interior, you can see a cross decorated with precious gems and a Lignum Crucis (a splinter from the Cross of the Calvary) donated by the Vatican and attached by three more crosses which hang from the ceiling. You can also see several paintings and images from the 15th and 17th century, as well as different golden and silver pieces with diamonds and emeralds which date back to the 15th century.
Next to all these objects, you can see a combination of jewels with pearls, gold, and gems from the 15th century that were donated by María de Sepedo, and the staff of Uvero Mejía, made in gold and pearl with a crown of pearls.
