Iglesia Las Mercedes Church was finished in 1555 after 32 years of hard work, and it still remains standing despite various serious meteorological phenomena, armed conflicts, and a poor maintenance.
In 1586, it was extremely damaged after the assault of the English pirate Francis Drake, even though, it was restored and used for four more centuries. During many years it was ruled by the Order of the Mercedarios Fathers and, for some years, it was also the home of the playwright Tirso de Molina.
The building has a vaulted nave and lateral chapels among its buttresses. Moreover, it can be observed a high chorus, and octogonal apse and a Baroque main altar. Above the presbytery, it stands out its vault in the shape of a grooved shell.
On its exterior you can contemplate a hundred-year-old tree in the square of the church, in addition of a water fountain located in the central point among three buildings that are used as educational centers, while the lateral entrance is adorned with tiles from Seville.
Being located in the Colonial City, it is very close to other interesting spots like the San Francisco Monastery, or the Independence Park.
