Dedicated to the celebration of the Coronation of the Virgin of Altagracia in 1922, the current Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Church has an eclectic structure with Neoclassical details. It was built over the previous chapel that belonged to the San Nicolás de Bari Hospital and which dated back to the same date as the church.
It was the first building with a barrel vault in reinforced concrete from Santo Domingo. Its facade is white and displays a Renaissance style, but it is also adorned with some details in Elizabethan Gothic. The wall facing the ruins of the hospital has a painting of the Virgin praying and watching over baby Jesus and wearing a crown of twelve stars, each of them for one of the twelve apostles.
In its interior, the decoration is characterized by the Byzantine influences of Arab and Spanish art. The church can be visited during Mass time.
In the same block, you can visit the Amber World Museum and the Ruins of the San Francisco Monastery.
