The Iglesia de Santa Bárbara Church is located in the old district of the quarry workers. It was built at the end of the 16th century over the mine from where it was taken the needed material to construct it, but the church had to be rebuilt in the 18th century due to the damages caused by a hurricane.
The outer facade stands out for its Spanish Colonial style, close to Baroque. It has three arcades made of brick, two of them are blind while the third has a door. Also, the facade is flanked by two unequal towers made of stone and bricks that provide an original appearance.
In its interior, the visitor can admire eight chapels from different periods located on a single nave decorated with stone semi-spheres called Bolas Isabelinas that surround the arches and windows.
As an interesting fact, Juan Pablo Duarte was baptized in this church. Popular tradition has it that this church was built above a cemetery so during the night, you can hear the spirits wailing and moving the gates of the church
